I had a brilliant time at the Bristol Artists’ Book Event (BABE) at UWE Bower Ashton campus last weekend. I really enjoyed my time on the ABC table… lovely to catch up with so many friends in real life. And such a treat to spend a whole day talking about books. I’d missed it more than I realised. It felt like waking up after a long hibernation. I sold a lot of books and bought a lot of books too - it’s a circular economy!
Plant Ink
Inspired by my trusty Pantone swatch book - in almost daily use for the past 20 years - Plant Ink is a limited edition catalogue of natural ink samples made as part of my Garden Residency last year. It could have had an alternative title of Fifty Shades of Brown, but it’s interesting to see all the colours together in one place to appreciate the subtle differences in those shades. The book will be available for the first time at BABE (the Bristol Artist’s Book Event) this coming weekend, and then in my online shop from next week…
UPDATE: Over the moon that the whole edition of 15 copies of Plant Ink sold out over the past week, so I’m afraid it won’t be listed in my online shop. Many thanks to anyone who bought a copy!
Week fifteen
A rather less productive week as I’ve been pitched back into catching up with work. The week ended with BABE 2021 – The Lost Weekend…. an online celebration of artist’s books to replace the usual amazing event in Bristol that was due to be held this year. Not the same as a real life book fair, but a wonderful chance to take part in some collaborative projects and to watch short films made by lots of other book artists (still available to watch here). I made one about five of my concertina books – illustrating the versatility of my very favourite book format, and showing some of my processes and inspirations – you can view it here).
One of the collaborative challenges set for BABE 2021 was to photograph or trace the backs of things… I made some plasticine prints of the bottoms of flowerpots from my shed. I really liked the bold patterns, and plan to carve some rubber stamps based on these prints. I also printed the backs of some dragon leaf ferns - less successful as a print, so I cut it up and made a grid collage using masking fluid and rhubarb root ink. It starts to look like tiger fur!
Finally, some simple paper weaving using more offcuts of my natural ink samples – I’m interested to see the crossover between paper and textile work that’s evolving as part of this ‘garden residency’.
Way out in production-lines-ville
It’s been a bit quiet on the blog front recently… but very busy in my studio, getting ready for the Made in Bristol Christmas Fair this coming weekend at the Colston Hall. Almost a hundred books made in the past month, so I’m all stocked up and ready to go. Come and say helloif you’re around in Bristol this weekend….
Post-BABE
What a brilliant couple of days at the Bristol Artist’s Book Event (BABE) at the Arnolfini at the weekend. So many people, so many talented exhibitors, and a real treat to spend the entire time talking about making books. Very inspiring (and a little bit exhausting). My friend Eva Hejdström came over from Sweden for the event, and we had a great time planning the structure for a book of our exchange of words collaboration (just 3 letters to go now). We also swapped some books, and I most definitely did very well out of that deal. So all done and dusted until 2021 – better get making again soon…
BABE 2019
Very excited to be taking part in the wonderful Bristol Artists’ Book Event (BABE) this coming weekend at the Arnolfini, down at the harbourside in Bristol. More than 80 artists are taking part, and it’s completely free, so come along and say hello. And get inspired - three galleries of bookish loveliness and lots of talks and workshops too. Open 11-6 on saturday and 11-5 on sunday. Can’t wait!
What a star
Making tiny star books for Bristol Artists Book Event (BABE) - running out of weeks so need to ramp up into production line mode. It’ll be at the Arnolfini in Bristol on the weekend of 30/31 March. . . .
Book trees
I’ve turned a small stack of 1960’s Pelican paperbacks into folded Christmas trees, topped with origami gold stars. The books were being thrown out by my Dad and are all on social work theory - a mighty festive subject matter. Ho ho ho. These will be on sale at the Made in Bristol gift fair at the Colston Hall on Saturday 8 December. Do come along and say hello if you’re in Bristol this weekend…
Way out in production-linesville
With the Made in Bristol Christmas Fair coming up on 8 December, I’m in full-on production line mode, making new batches of many of my books. It’s a little chaotic at the moment, but I love that tipping point when it moves from lots of component parts to neat piles of finished books.
to and fro
Two collections of books - the first is a box of my small books headed to the Small Publishers Fair in London earlier this month (many thanks to Sarah Bodman at UWE for chaperoning them). For the first time I went along to the fair, and spent a wonderful few hours perusing and talking about books with lots of interesting similarly biblio-minded folk. The second photo is my modest haul of new books photographed on the train table on the way home (any colour coordination is purely coincidental!) Beautiful publications by Anwyl Cooper-Willis, Daniel Lehan, Philippa Wood of Caseroom Press and Lee Shearman of Micro Library Books.
Book fairs coming up
My small books are packaged up ready for their very own city breaks... they can be seen at the Small Publishers Fair at Conway Hall in London on 10-11 November, and then in Berlin (artbookberlin.de) on 17-19 November. They're better travelled than me.
Cardiff Artists' Book Event
A really great day on Saturday at the first Cardiff Artists' Book event at The Printhaus (amazing screen printing workshop in Cardiff). Lovely to catch up with other book artists and to meet new people interested in handmade books. Hope this will be the first of many!
CAB 2017
Looking forward to taking part in the first Cardiff Artists' Books event this coming Saturday at The Printhaus in Cardiff. Working out my table layout in advance because I won't have long to set up!
Belated BABE wrap up
The Bristol Artist's Book Event (BABE) at the Arnolfini in Bristol on 1/2 April was an amazing weekend. Beautiful sunny weather certainly brought the crowds out, and there was barely a quiet moment for the whole two days. It was fantastic to meet so many people interested in artists' books and to spend a blissful weekend talking about books and printmaking (instead of Trump and other depressing political nonsense). I'd almost lost my voice by the saturday evening… talking that much is unusual for a hermit like me. Lots of sales and positive feedback, and a strengthened resolve to continue making more books. Just two years to prepare for the next one...
Countdown to BABE
Final couple of days of preparation for the Bristol Artists' Book Event (BABE) at the Arnolfini in Bristol this weekend (1 and 2 April). I've been busy making for months but still seem to take it up to the wire and will only just be ready on time. Lots of new books, cards and a fresh batch of hand-stamped notebooks will be on sale, alongside 79 other stalls of bookish loveliness. Hope to see you there!
Heading South
Packaging up books ready to hand over to the lovely Sarah Bodman to take along to Counter – Plymouth Art Book Fair (Saturday 24 October at KARST).
